Artistic Inspiration

I’m endlessly inspired by the natural world, and the properties of paint.  My landscapes always begin in chaos: I scribble words, make marks, lay down wild dribbly undercoats, and smear color with zero restraint. Really exploring how far I can push the paint to get the feeling I want. Once the canvas becomes a riot of energy, I start transforming it with thin layers of paint, slowly obscuring the noise until something luminous and ethereal emerges.  This part is very meditative for me, and I love the process of making something beautiful and peaceful out of chaos. I believe this process gives my work its unusual depth and luminosity.

Speaking of paint, what thrills me most is the meeting point of two (or more!) colors...when they collide, bleed, and transform one another. That delicate, shifting edge is where the paint does something unexpected and uncontrollable, behaving entirely on its own terms. Those are the delicious moments for me.
